CJMR first signed on the air live from the council chambers of what was the first council meeting for the newly formed city of Mississauga in 1974.
The History
At that time the frequency was 1190 AM and it was confined to the status of a
daytime station for the first years of service before it changed to the 1320
frequency in 1990. The shortcomings of a daytime only station were well documented
with the CRTC (Canadian Radio/Telecommunications Commission). During the 1980’s
there was a movement afoot to have all daytime stations relinquish their status
in favour of a full twenty-four hour service. Some of the difficulties meant
that the station (during the winter months) did not sign on until 7.45am and
was off the air at sundown or around 4.45pm.
Always ahead of it’s
time, CJMR had one of the first permanent off-site communications centres in
the
form of a broadcast booth in the Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga.
Not only did this remote location air many hours of live programming, but it
became a well known fixture for listeners to meet on-air personalities and
guests.
It wasn’t until January 9th, 1990 that CJMR became 1320AM and during that time we were privileged to carry the Toronto Blue Jays, in addition to a number of hours of Multi-Cultural and Christian programs.
On February 5th, 2001 CJMR became a full time Multi-Cultural station carrying fifteen different languages weekly.
Licensed for 20,000 watts, CJMR reaches an area from approximately Kitchener through to Cobourg, and as far north as the town of Orillia.
